This is a quick thank you to Susan Kelley's writing class at CAPA. I sometimes feel like i'm living in a bubble, locked away here in the home office, snowbound and slightly wonky from the lack of interaction with actual people (I love it, it's true, but it's nice to know there are actual humans out there). Yesterday I had a chance to sit in a coffee shop with 14 or so seniors and talk about writing, this blog, and what it means to create something lasting with words, even if only for oneself.
I talked a lot, they talked a lot, and in the end I probably got more out of it than they did. Even the simple moments, like walking through a school between classes, something I haven't done since, um, high school. It will stay with me.
Susan, my high school friend who was dumb enough to invite me to this gig, said she teaches at CAPA to feed her soul, and after just a couple hours and too much caffeine, I get it. Great kids with talent and a boatload of ideas, philosophies and hopes and dreams, and i was lucky to share some time with them.
Thanks CAPA!
As the teacher mentioned here, I can only invalidate the claim that you got more out of it than we did. We were so lucky to have the renewed energy of a non-teacher, non-student - a truly great day for coffee and talking about what all of us in the room love so much.
The wisdom and perspective you brought those kids will outlast us both. Thanks so much for your wonderful, creative brain and the energy that comes from just being yourself. It reminded me why I thought you were so cool back in high school.
